Rolling Cheese

Verona, Italy – Years ago, people tested the age of Maiorchino cheese by rolling a wheel of it in the street. In the town of Novara di Sicilia, near Peloritani mountains, this practice became a game called “Lancio del Maiorchino.”

A wheel weighing roughly a 12 kg is set rolling and then released from the cord it was wrapped in, jumping and spinning; the winner is the person who, with ability and a bit of luck, gets the cheese to roll the farthest.

The game is now appreciated also by women and they participate in the traditional tournament organized by the local association, which has over a hundred members.
